THIS!

Oh, all right, it happened, it happened :)

that horizontal line across the top isn't a gash in the metal, but it does look it, doesn't it?  It's a couple of salmon stickers, and all that's left with any color is the stripe.

Congrats on the new member of the family,

My mother in laws old camper had one of those built in mantel lanterns, we made good use of it.

As long as the valve is solid and the installation is safe with the heat generated it's a great item (IMO). (no different than a stove). With that said I'm not sure about the possibility of it generating CO,

It supplies light and heat without any electrical drain.

I thought about putting one in my 2013 trailer, I sometimes use a lantern in the trailer to conserve juice and heat it up.

Thanks for the input on the lantern!

I do think we'll end up using it.  Mantle seems like it's in decent condition, globe is perfect, and you're right, free heat!  We'll see about the integrity of the gas line and valve, but it should be fine WRT its installation location: it's right over the stove, so it's got the stove's metal hood/shield above, an integrated one behind, and about a foot to the next-nearest wall.

Between the Jalousie windows and generally, um, 1971 construction, I don't think it'll be a problem to get enough fresh air in the trailer. What we were seeing on catalytic heaters, 1000btu requires a square inch air passage to the outside world, and single mantle lanterns are between that and 2500btu or so.  I think if we get this as sealed as possible, we'll still have substantially more ventilation than that :)

On the minor threadjack front-

The home built teardrop seems like the best option.
If you're considering homebuilt, you've gotta check this out. I'm really considering giving this a shot when it goes on sale.

http://www.clcboats.com/shop/boats/development-projects/clc-teardrop-trailer.html

The street date for the kits is May 1, 2016.  They are taking 10% fully refundable deposits now. Total price is $1800 for the base kit, price of options havent rolled out yet.  The faq is updated on the clc site.  I got a quote for shipping to eureka for $227.

I'm like 80+% sure I'm pulling the trigger on this one.  It's perfect for kayak fishing and totally customizable.  Unless something better comes along, soon, I'm in.

Those harbor freight trailers just have a light oil coating on the bearings, first thing you do is pack the bearings in grease.  Although I'm thinking of using a different trailer than the HF one, I'll still repack the bearings :)

Definitely.  Actually thinking about just replacing the axle/springs/rims/tires entirely.  Doesn't look like it's stupid expensive or terribly difficult to do, and I can get wheels on there with the same bolt pattern as my tow vehicle for a redundant spare.  Existing axle looks OK at casual glance, but hey, 44 years of neglect, you know?
