At least they were wearing a PFD. Glad they are ok.

It would be nice to know what they were doing paddling one of the most treacherous spots on the California coast as the tide fell to minus right after sunset...

Dressed for immersion?

VHF radios?

Flotation?

Sounds like they had just enough wherewithal to survive their own foolhardiness, but we haven't heard many facts.

I'm not just wanting to criticize - it's just a very big deal to me that many of us here in this club are very focused on safety and awareness.  As it should be for anyone kayaking in the ocean or other big water.

I hope that new members and onlookers here at NCKA realize the gravity of decisions made regarding when and where to kayak and what gear, training and preparation to have.

Glad they are OK. Kind of strange that the brother in the kayak was in Kirby Cove while the brother in the water was swimming in the navigational channel. You would think they would stick together for support and to make themselves easier to spot.

I??? why? Should have hung on end of Bro's kayak and paddled to shore. Some of this story not being told. Separated in fog? Must have had safety gear as he was probable in the water a while. Glad they survived it :smt001
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

This is how the situation played out in my head,

Brother 1 (B1) " Hey its getting dark and my boat is sinking, im going to swim to shore"

Brother 2 (B2) "OK, Hang on, ill call 911" [looks down at phone which is bright enough to ruin low light vision, looks back up, and B1 is gone with the ripping tide]

I feel very blessed to be a part of this community for many reasons, two of them are that there we have a huge emphasis on safety and on getting each others back.

Those guys got lucky, and hopefully they find someone that will teach them about safety, how to handle themselves in an emergency, and hopefully they never find themselves in that kind of a situation again. Their folly adds to the general consensus that kayaking can be dangerous, and hopefully makes people more aware and safe out on the water.

aloha,

Isao

I am not going to question where or why they were where they were.  Glad they were rescued.
