Hey Steve, have you or anyone else tried parking in the lower parking at the Romero visiting center . Jumped that fence and drug your yaks down that small hill. Not sure its legal ? But there are other access points further up the hill.

I'm sure that's not legal, as your kayak has to pass the mussel inspection. If you go, be sure your yak is dry and clean---mine failed to pass muster last week. What a bummer that was...

depending on how the weather is. We might start at the small lake (forebay) first and if no activity then we will head over to the big lake entering from Basalt entrance and launch out of Bay of Pig. It may be muddy so getting down to the water might be a challenge. The last time it was muddy but was able to get down engaging 4x4.

We usually head there around noon. what time are you thinking?

Oh Schmidt ! that's right. forgot about that. You can now tell how often I fish there. Doh ! Ug , that sucks. I drove all the way to Quarry lakes one time and was denied. This was almost 6 yrs ago. Was heavy fog on the way over there and they cut me no slack. No more for me. So much easier at shadow cliffs. No hassle.
So it might be possible if got kayak checked out at station and then drove back hoped fence and then fished. Going to call the romero center and see if it is ok to park there and if ok to hop fence.
Worth a try. Otherwise its a long paddle to that side from dinosaur point.

Heads up! The lake is closed to boats. The forebay is on warning and the D Dam is closed due to debris in the water.

Similar situation, in that it was foggy on the drive down (not to mention that the kayak got rained on the night before, and Hobie hatches are more like water-resistant than water-proof). I stopped about a mile away from the inspection station and dried everything as best I could, but forgot to close one of the hatches. When I arrived, the inspection person saw that the hatch was open and it was all downhill from there...

Was pretty pissed myself. Packed up and headed to del valle where the guy was more understandable. My kayak was pretty dry though. I looked for shadow cliffs but no go. Was before I had my cell with navi.  :smt001

thanks for the report slatroni. Save me the hour drive. Hopefully tomorrow will be better!

As for the inspection, depending on who you get. I ask them the last time about the fog and rain, they say its all depends on the person who does it. Some are understanding and use their judgement. I go there so often lately they know me already. All they remember is the hullavator and how cool it is.

finger cross for tomorrow :)
