I wasnt saying they sit against the current in one spot and wait, lol. But think about it, they drift WITH the outgoing tide outwards.then they smell the food thats now above them and have to flip a bitch, go against the current, relocate the scent and go find it it and eat it. And thats just one piece of food, they would be constantly doing u-turns to find what they just smelled/sensed. That doesnt seem effective to me. My finder goes loco with arches on the bottom the classic sturgeon mark ( on the 80hertz setting of course ) the last few times ive been out in the last 3 wks. And they always pass thru my transducer reading traveling the same direction. Im sticking with the against the current approach.

How can you tell direction of travel looking at the transducer reading?

The real sturgeon question is: why the hell do they randomly jump in the air?

Quote from the Wikipedia:

"Many sturgeon leap completely out the water, usually making a loud splash which can be heard half a mile away on the surface and probably further under water. It is not known why they do this, but suggested functions include group communication to maintain group cohesion, catching airborne prey, courtship display, or to help shed eggs during spawning. Other plausible explanations include escape from predators, shedding parasites, or to gulp or expel air."

Fish and Wildlife sonar tracked a few of them  I bet someone could get a copy of the report. GPS and sonar tag followed with a boat for days. I talked to one of the boat crew a few years back. It was Green Sturgeon study.

There are a few projects that have tracked green sturgeon that have shown strong patterns of movement according to tide. While some fish just wander randomly, most fall into a pattern. The research doesn't show as much of pattern for traveling with or against tidal movement, but it shows a preference to depth during different portions of the tide. During the slack tide or just as the tide is slowly building, sturgeon seem to stay in shallower water and then move to deeper water during periods of maximum tidal movement.

Let me see if I can find a link to the report.

So I sometimes fish the shallow waters of grizzly bay and there's like zero current even on big tides and the fish seem to just graze the muddy flats like cows on a pasture.  They bite on the outgoing tide and the flood. I think the fish just follow wherever there nose takes them.

If they're jumping they're not on the bottom feeding!
