I've seen the term "squared seas" in the marine forecast, but I'm not sure exactly what that means. According to this site,
http://www.pacificpowerboating.com/Articles/Kevo0808Web.pdf
it means that the period and swell are the same (like 9 feet at 9 seconds, but not 9 feet at 10 seconds). Other places give far more generic descriptions, and I'm curious what NOAA actually means when they use this term in a forecast.

I don't like stuff that sucks.

It sounds right. In math 9 squared is 9x9. Sounds like a little lingo. The same number twice being called squared.

You'll know it when you're in it

Probably worse than 9ft at 9 seconds is something like 5 ft at 3 seconds, where you spend all your time recovering, I invariably take a swim or two

9x9 for a small boat is brutal, on a kayak not so bad

I've been in 25 foot swell that was spread out enough that it actually was pleasant, but squeeze them together a little and things get steep

Hope that helps

Get onto the site where the forecast is and find the contact info and write them an email, I've gotten good responses from them on questions I've had.

It does take sometime for them to respond but then the answer is coming from the source.

The "same height and period" is how I've heard it explained.

In reality, I just take it to mean any short period swell where the waves are stacked up tight.
