Ha! I like the "what's the size limit on WSB?" idea!!

I've actually done something similar. It was a very slow day, so I called out "30 pounder in the box!"

What'ya know... They heard me just fine... They were very eager to hear where I was, but I let them marinate in a taste of their own silence.

That's funny. Many years ago our boat broke down about a mile off Salmon Creek Beach. We drifted to a commercial crab pot and tied off to it. Then started broadcasting for a tow back to Bodega....crickets!! Tons of boats all  over the area....crickets!  Waited a few minutes and asked for a radio check. A skipper came back loud and clear...he was close. Then asked the skipper for a tow...a long minute of silence and he replied yes. We paid him all the cash we had in our pockets at the time and then the next day placed an expensive bottle of scotch in his boat which he also docked at Spud Point.

If I'm going out with a group, A hookup, i usually do a radio check (ch69) with them and always get an answer. If not, I know somethings wrong with the VHF. But when i  go out on a solo run, I would do a radio check with the Harbor Master on 69. Theire usually scanning all radio Chanel's. But remember,  safety first! You just have to make sure all your gear is Read to go before you go out in the bigassocean :smt001
