Hi everyone,

First off thanks to all of you who are helping me to answer my amateur questions on this forum.  I'm trying to decide between getting a reel on my gun or using a float line/ float setup. I know that a float line setup is safer than using a reel because boats and other divers can see you.
I'll mainly be diving in Monterey waters. And I'm kinda worried about using a float line because it would be a pain in the ass if it gets caught in kelp on every dive.
Any suggestions and or input is appreciated. I know a lot if you guys dive Monterey so I'm curious as to what you use and why..

Thanks in advance.

Vaughn

I don't dive but all those I have seen diving locally use a floatline (freediving).

Hit up one of our members Joe (Bloodbath) ... he's local & owns PacificNalu Spearfishing.  He can help you get hooked up with the gear you need to freedive the Monterey Bay area & beyond.

I use a 75 foot white floatline and just let it trail free behind me with no float.

Works great!!

i'm REALLY new at diving and was told to just geta 50' float line and to not use the reel for kelp or rock diving---seems like its been fine--I only have 50' floating rope with clip at each end..seems 20-30' is as deep as im going now and that leaves plenty to angle away and still reach top...best part has been -being able to lay my gun at a hole or fish i spotted and go get air and come back to the same spot
learning other ways to use my rope still --like if I drop something $$ I can lower my gun down to mark that general area

I have only had my rope snag once under a ledge I swam around--but there was plenty left to tug it clear

now if I can stop wrapping around my head as I go up and down -i'll be happy
I just bought 30' to try soon and see if that will work better for shallow stuff---worst case my wife will now have one for her pole spear
best part is as I struggle (new guy) to take a fish off the spear or put on my hip stringer I can dangle the gun on the rope over my elbow like a waiters towel and it stays close by till i'm ready to re-load
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

People aren’t supposed to look back. I’m certainly not going to do it anymore.”

Awesome, just got that same advice from Damanij. I'm gonna go for that white float line for sure. Plus after watching your HOLE HUNTING 101 video I'm trying to slay the monster ling in these holes and marking seems them more than convenient.
