going to build myself a bait tank.
was wondering if its worth pulling water from the ocean
or recirculating and aireate the contained water?
the second seams easier to build and less hassle,
no priming the pump.

depends on what type of bait you intend to use....

most folks just go basic and use a "bait tube" style....

easy to make, with supplies purchased at Home Depot.... PVC tube, end caps; then just drill a bunch of holes to let water circulate....

If you wanna get fancy and see your bait, go to TAPs Plastic and get clear tube and do the same....

What bait do you want to keep? Shiners and top smelt aerators are fine. Anchovies, sardines macs etc you want a recirculating system for sure. Especially chovies and dines will roll real quick without a good pump.

Around here for saltwater anchovies are one of the bet baits. They are also the most fragile.

Good luck and let us know what you build. I've had god luck with a 360 gph 12 volt pump and a 6 volt battery.

I built a bait tank out of a Vittles Vault Outback Plus 15 that draws water from the ocean, and requires no priming. It keeps anchovies and mackerels alive all day.

The pump is plumbed to go through the scupper. This is my live well.
