I have a Euro-style bank fishing rod that is 11 feet long. I used it in the kayak once but the butt section was too long and unwieldy (it is about 24.5" to the center of the reel seat). If I shorten this to around 16" I think it might work nicely in the kayak. I know a rod this long is unconventional, but some people rave about 10' and longer mooching rods.

A further complication is that the reel seat doesn't work well. How expensive and complicated would it be to replace the reel seat at the same time as shortening the butt section?

One option would be to carefully remove all the existing grips and go "deckhand" style (google it if you aren't familiar). Then you can put your reel wherever you want it.
