Hi all, Just wondering what the suggested route would be kayaking to Minnow hole. I see two options. Starting from Garcia and head upstream during low tide or starting from the marina next to Miller park. I called Sherwood Harbor and they will charge 35 bucks a day for me to park and launch. He said I'd have to hoof it a bit to launch also so no bueno on Sherwood.

I was thinking I stay on the Yolo side to keep the peace. I hear bank fishermen don't like kayakers near their side. I won't be anchoring as I'm not too comfortable with doing this on Sav River.

I'm planning on trolling with cured salmon or herring,  then jigging, and casting flying Cs and similar for salmon. Still haven't caught any salmon yet.  Any suggestions/tips would be appreciated :)

Forget the herring and all that stuff. Launch at the beach at the top of minnow hole on an out goin tide. Paddle up the first straight and even the yacht club if u want and just jig those drifts all day long.

You should pick an off day and not close to weekends or early mornings..
Been there yesterday and today and anglers both side(waders yolo and bank sac side)..
they might try shoot you with flying cs if they think you are in their way(but for a first timer there, they all seem pretty nice)..
Oh and large boats passes by there with no care.. like the yatch size that makes bigger waves..

Good info and tips everyone. Some I can't do. I work 8-5 Mon-Fri and it gets dark too soon after work. Portage is hard. Got lots of friends but not many are into kayaking and are unable to port a kayak to the drop off site. Launching at Stans will work. I'll try to scout out a place that I can launch my kayak near Minnow hole and see if that'll work too.

Someone suggested or it sounded like I should not even try to kayak fish there? Is it that dangerous? If you folks feel strongly about that, then I may not go or  I could just bank fish with everyone else.  I fish mostly at AR so it's less crowded there (boat wise anyway). Not much fishing at Sac River unless you count the water trickling thru Port of Sac.

Thanks again everyone

I don't think its dangerous in the sac if you've got experience and have a good solid kayak.  There is a lot of boat traffic, but the waves they throw off aren't any worse than the ones I see in the delta, the ocean and on the lake lice infested lakes. I take my 15' aluminum on there and I consider that boat less sea worthy than my kayak. I wouldn't anchor there though and make sure you paddle upstream from where you launch/want to land.   I would do what kayakkid says.  Paddle up river and jig down.  That's what many of the boaters do in that stretch on the yolo side.  there's plenty of fish that run through that section even before you get to minnow hole, so even if you don't make it all the way up there against the current you'll be fine.  you will want there to be at least some tidal movement before you start jigging though.  While tides don't really affect the water movement much up there, it seems like the salmon notice it..somehow.

There are plenty of other places that are more yak friendly where you will still catch fish.
I hate combat fishing.
On the other hand, it's pretty fun to maneuver through all through all the anchored boats while listening to them bitch about ya.  :smt044

Its not bad at all. I can only fish weekends since i got school and i have no issues with current or  boat traffic. No reason to fish specifically at minnow hole when u got grounds just as good a short paddle up stream. The beach at the top of mh is an easy launch and free. As for boat wakes, my friends with a tiny little aruba handles the wakes fine so id imagine any othet yak would. Talked to a boat yesterday that got 3 fish on the out-go jiging. Id say give it shot and see how u like it.

Thank guys. I think I'll try that. I have a Santa Cruz Raptor so it's very very stable. Won't break any speed records but on  a glassy  non wind day, I'm able to tread at 4mph with medium effort (usually it's when I realize I'm cutting it close to when the park is closing).  However, I'm usually at a 1.75-2mph pace.

I'll always start upstream so I won't get stranded and like you folks mentioned, minnow hole isn't a must. Baby steps are fine. Getting out there, stay within my limits, no anchor, head upstream a bit and have some fun.

So far I've been lucky.  Almost everywhere I've been, everyone's been nice and always chatted with me. Rollins, Scott's Flat, Folsom, Natoma, Port of Sac, and American near Howe, South lake Tahoe, Lake Clementine, etc.  This is on shore and on the water. The only place that was kinda crazy was at Bass lake with the Jet skiers.

I checked out Stan's Marina. It was a short and steep launch so I went to Clarksburg boat launch instead. it was all good. Water was calm. Boat wakes weren't bad. There was one big boat that caused my hull to slap on the wake but it still wasn't scary. I was trolling FBRs upstream  and not a single nibble. Jigging downstream was much better. I got a few hits but whatever they were, they shook it off. The rest of the time, I was they watching the fish take selfies with my FF.
