My wife got me one of these for x-mas.  I was curious about it so I looked it up.  I hope she got it here, becuase it's a great deal at $70.  I've used the paddle twice now and it's such an imrovement over my old paddle.  Granted, my old paddle is one of the black rectangular bladed aluminium Ocean Kayak brand paddles that weighs about 5 lbs.

I now have a paddle that weighs less than many carbon paddles, has multiple feather settings, and a spoon shaped blade.  Anyway, I thought I'd share the deal.

Bsteves--I'd be wary of that paddle if I were you. It's made by a company that makes bottom of the line inflatables so goes with their paddles. The only reason you'd spend the bucks on a carbon fiber paddle is because of it's lightweightness and tensile strength. If you have a fiberglass paddle thats lighter than carbon fiber then it's sure to break under duress. A good CF paddle with nylon blades will weigh between 30-35 ounces. The blades on good paddle will have a smooth dihedral face front and back. It's convienent for stowing or packing to have a two piece paddle but strong paddles are always 1 pc with the exception of Lendal paddles out of the UK. Your not going to get a good paddle period for under $99 unless it's used or on mega going out of business sale. Your blades are an important part of equipment don't cheese out on a cheap knockoff--sorry misses bsteves i hope you don't read this. I recommend  Aquabound paddles out of Canada. They only make paddles nothing else. They'll cut them to whichever length you like (220-230cm for most SOT's) They retail for $180+. The choice of pro's worldwide.

I thought that post might ferret out a decent review of it.  So I guess it isn't much of a deal.  After further research, I haven't found any horror stories on the net about the paddle and the retail price seems to be about $90.

At any rate, it's still nicer to paddle than my previous paddle (which is now stowed inside my kayak just in case).  When and if it does break under duress, I'll pull out the crappy old paddle make my way back to shore and take your advice on the Aquabound paddles.  Oh and don't worry, as far as I know the misses doesn't read this forum.

I have one of those at work and it is a piece of poo.  The ferrule in particular is maddening.  For the most part, Sevylor stuff is junk, but their little SVX white water boats are pretty damn good for the money.  We maintain a fleet of 5 or 6 at work for redd surveys and they have been bomb-proof.  We also use them for our swiftwater resue class on Cache Creek, and they run 2s and 3s with ease and we have no idea what we're doing.

That's funny--at the mad river fish hatchery we use the same boats, Seyvlor tahitis. Must be a govt thing. They are fun for the money but I'm not giving up my NRS maverick anytime soon.

I have two Aquabound paddles, the Manta Ray and a Sting Ray.
Bought the Sting Ray last August and liked it a lot. This weekend I was checking the ferrule and noticed a crack running through it. It split through length wise. I didn't like that much so I took it back to REI. They don't have this one anymore so they gave me a credit (no questions or grief!). I'll order another when they get rid of the winter toys and bring in the new kayak stuff.

We don't have Tahitis we have the SVX.  No Maverick, but MUCH better than the Tahiti...

I've never seen that one before. It looks just like the maverick. Lucky you guys. For the money though and with a wetsuit the Tahiti is fun shooting rapids.
