Yeah I got alot of laughs on the bloody line comment  :smt001, this only happened only one time and it was a couple of days ago just outside the north part of GG bridge  when I thought I snagged a rock.  When I finally broke the swimbait free (rare time the line didn't break) the bottom of the mono line was a strong red color maybe 8-10 inches from the swimbait, this very well could of been from abrasion on a red rock or coral but looked to me like blood!  The hook had some small fleshy thing on it but was not easy to distinguish what it was so.  I thought maybe I had snagged a shark and somehow the blood soaked the line but sounds like thats not possible or not likely from the comments I received.

Again I making lots of assumptions so far because I'm new to ocean fishing and going out mostly by myself.

Based on the responses so far I'm going to try stepping up to 20-22lb mono with direct tie (one rig with improved cinch and other palomar) and see if I have any difference.

I was fishing Santa Cruz last month and there were a lot of red colored jellyfish. My line constantly snagged them and their tenticles.  The flesh/tenticles looked like blood on my line and bits of bloody flesh.  Could be a possibility.

Also check the line near your lure and your knot frequently for frays.
Run the line through your finger tips and if you detect any roughness cut off rough section and retye.

Run the line through your lips. You'll detect more frays that way.
Bring it Antonio.   :smt044

Uni knot is easy to remember and perform. Works for braid and mono and is very strong.
+1 i can tie my knot with my eyes closed
