Dear NCKA Bruddahs,

This post is by no means meant to scare us kayak fishermen. But I just read Tom Steinstra's article on today's SF Chronicle about he the El Nino currents raising the ocean temp in Northern CA 7 to 10 degrees and  contributing  to an explosion of large quantities of food sources for fish, particularly off the Farallones attracting a larger than usually number of Great Whites in Northern Ca water in the next few months.
I have a lot of respect for Tom Steinstra as an outdoor writer and read his religiously every week for many years now.
Anyway, I for one do not plan to go out by myself this Fall!!!
Here's the link to his Sunday article. You may have to copy and paste in in your browser.

Oh, no - they are endangered, numbers have plummeted, they need protection! Hogwash. From the article cited by Michael:

"Way more sharks: For years, based on estimates in the ’90s, we assumed there were about 200 to 400 great white sharks at any one time off the Bay Area coast, and in turn, the state listed them as a protected species. A recent study by 10 scientists, published in a scientific journal, says there are now more like 2,400 great white sharks off the Bay Area coast."

Survival of the fittest. Soon there will be a few less ocean kayakers. It is just like my fav trout stream with all its Rattlesnakes, they keep away the riffraff and the people with too vivid an imagination.

Question his reported 7 to 10 degree difference.  That is a HUGE amount of heat.  While that may "contribute to an explosion of large quantities of food sources for" certain fish, wouldn't it parboil other endemic non-migratory species?
