I got the salmon bug!
Since i live close to bodega, ive done my fair share of salmon fishing from boats.
And this year i wana grab one from the yak rea bad! From what im thinking, mocching easier that troling since i do not have a mirage , and it seems the hardest part is kreeping up with the fish as you dont have the leverage of hearge boat to keep tension on the fish.
Anyone got rod recomendations, gear set ups or other experience with kayak salmon??

It's not complicated and keeping up with the fish is not a problem.  I just got another one on the mooch today. 20-25lb fluorocarbon, 3/0 circle hook and a 4-6ft leader with a swivel, aslider, and a 4-6oz cannonball depending on the depth and currents.  Some folks tie a Rapala knot on the leader so it can be easily removed if your going to thread your bait with a needle upside down. I have had just as much luck nose hooking an anchovy as I have threading a chovy or cut herring.  Let the salmon take and the rod fully load before reeling down. If it let's go feed it more line.  Reel up slowly cause sometimes you get bit on the way up.  There's tons of bait out so salmon are full and lazy as well as deep because of the warmer ocean temperatures so they would rather have an easy meal come to them than chase a trolled moving meal.

If I'm not mistaken, there is an area in Bodega where you are not allowed to mooch. Trolling only. Just FYI

I use an ugly stik "custom" medium light action for salmon (love it!).

When you feel the tap tap start reeling, do not set the hook, when it loads up reel as fast as you can and don't stop.  Play the fish out.  You don't have anyone else to net it for you like on a power boat so your best bet is to wait till the fish is done.  I actually kick at the fish when it first comes boatside to get it to run.  Trying to net it hot is a recipe for disaster.  Lost lots that way.

Big net also helps.

Go get em!

It's true, there is an area near Bodega that's no mooching. Trolling only. Check the regs.
