Went to Del Valle to try to catch a striper with those jumbo minnows again but ended up with five trout the biggest was 23” about 5.5 pounds the rest where small. I would like to say I caught them trolling but no I used power bate. After I got my limit I went on the Striper hunt, I could not find any bait balls to speck of, no Stripers once again for me :smt013 next time I will get them :smt005

why are hatchery fins like that? do they clip them or they just wear out on the edge of the tank or other fish or what?

They get abraded by the concrete walls.  As the fish get bigger, they make more contact, and it gets worse.  You can get great looking hatchery fish in earthen runways, but then disease and maintenance is the new issue.

Pat, Nice fish. The first picture you submitted with your catch looks like it was taken from the first island. The beach behind you is where I start my drift back towards the launch or about there and stay in 15' of water or so. Go half way down with the minnows the stripers like to cruise those area's. Hey Pat, Nice fish!!!

I think it was you I spoke to briefly, I was on the white marauder.

Woke up late so I decided to go in for the afternoon shift,  got there at about noon after driving all the way to Castro Valley for some minnows.
Trolled for a few minutes near the launch but decided to move up-stream a bit and on my way up, a bit before the first island, I hooked into a striper (23").  After landing it we went up past the islands searching for trout but didn't find any.  On the way back down I hooked into another striper (21"). When we got back to the launch it was already pretty dark and we were pretty much the last ones left on the lake.  Cleaned up the fish and came back home.

Nice day out, first time I've been out fishing in a few weeks.

Frank I got the Trout strait across from the launch ramp with green power bait and a short leader about 15-18” started out with a 3’ leader, no hits shortened up the leader got my limit in a couple of hours there where others racking them in with white power bait seamed to be a lot better. The photo is where you are talking about I was up there drifting for Stripers I was fishing close to the bottom I guess I should have come up a bit, there is always next time.

Imgonnayak that was me I happen to be drifting by when you hook-up with your first Striper glad you got your limit nice to have briefly met you and your wife??

There was one other gentleman out in a 15’ Prowler I am sorry I do not remember you name it was nice to have met you also, hope you got in to them.

Happy Holidays to all :smt006

Pat

Way to go on the awesome trout. Sorry no love on the stripers, however the trout are safer to eat anyway. Let me know if you want to hook up for the MFF in a few weeks.

I've always love hijacking a thread.  :smt004

why dont the earthen containers result in worn fins?

they somehow don't contact it? it's just smoother? softer?

I mean there are a lot of materials that are smooth. what about painted concrete?

Pat,

Nice meeting you. I am the one with a yellow P15.  I moved to the island where I saw two fishermen catching fish after fish. They left when they got their limits and had released some. But when it came to my turn,  I only got two hits on nightcrawler under a bobbler. The fish snapped both of my lines probably due to line twist and tight drag.
