A fishing opportunity without Kayak. My grand daughter is doing a summer internship with NOAA and is involved in Rockfish research so I am privy to certain opportunities.  In this case, on Thursday the 30th, they need a few sportsmen for a FREE chartered catch & release fishing trip out of Ft. Bragg.  Last I heard they had room for a few more participants.   I am trying to let my friends know of this opportunity.  If you are interested email Morgan Arrington - NOAA Affiliate <[email protected]>

Morgan wrote: A little bit about our project: Project Coordinator Sabrina Beyer and our partners at UC Santa Cruz and NOAA Fisheries are offering free hook-and-line catch-and-release charters for volunteers this summer to test out rockfish descending devices, help collect fisheries data and provide feedback. We will have five different types of devices on-board which all allow anglers to re-pressurize rockfish suffering from pressure trauma. These devices are proving to be an effective method for releasing rockfish that under regulations are not allowed to be retained and preventing "floaters" (rockfish that are too buoyant to swim back down to the bottom). Yes, this NOAA study/outreach is centered in Monterey.  They do this at various ports up and down the coast.  I think they have one remaining in Morro Bay area?

A belated note of thanks for posting this, Sierra Marty. I contacted Morgan, joined the charter out of Fort Bragg, & had a great time. Couldn't keep this lingcod, but it was a nice way to end the day!

Yeah, I had fun and I loved seeing my grand daughter working.  It was nice to see there is a method of not "wasting" rockfish that are not keepable.  I keep meaning to fish the ocean from my kayak like I did in my youth but I just hate the drive to the coast when the high mountain lakes are so near.    I may post more in the future if she continues with this NOAA program.  You never  know what interns will be able to do or not do....funding is quite flaky.
 Thanks for going!
