A while back, Cody shot my mirror with a pellet gun. He has been saving up to replace it, and he finally wrangled an extra $85 for the new assembly. Today, was his first time wrenching on an automobile! Five minute job for me, but took him close to 45. Not bad, I gave him instructions, he had to figure out what tools to use, and he got his first lesson in metric sockets! That took the most time, figuring out what size those three nuts were. He started with standard, and when he said none of them fit well, I asked if he tried metric. (I knew they were 10mm, but wasnt going to tell him) He figured it out and got it swapped out. Getting the door panel back on was kicking his ass, and, it's my truck and wanted it right, so I helped a little bit.
Pretty proud of him, he did a good job, put my tools away, and didnt lose any parts or break anything. Now we are going fishing!

Very impressive way to deal with the situation. It can be tough dealing with kids mistakes but  pay for and repair the error is the best. Sorely needed in today's world. Way to go!

Props to Cody. We see so many people break door clips when removing door panels here at the dealership.

Exactly!! I warned him about that, and showed him the clips. He lined up the panel and I popped it on and explained it to him that if it isnt going, don't force it! Sonething isnt lined up or something is bound up. He did good. I think an oil change is next for him and tire rotation. When I was his age, I had already done an inframe on a 3408 cat in a dozer. My dad helped, but not much. I think it is very important to know how to use tools, something his generation is losing.  There's still hope!

Great parenting!  Glad to see there are still some who believe in instilling responsibility and appropriate consequences.  Cody will be a much better person for it.

Guidance and support.

Doing it for them, or handing out the easy button is certainly going to send them the wrong signals in life.

Rule number one. Have had same experiences with my boys In doing mechanical jobs. Take the time and patience to do something correctly. DONT FORCE IT !  :smt002 Unless it was a old t.v. from the 70's and you would bang it on the side to get it to work again. We don't need no stinkin repair man. Actually we couldn't afford one.   :smt009  :smt005

Oh ! BTW,
Glad your feeling better ya Scum bag..  :smt006

Nice Rich!  When Quinn broke his X-Box we made him save up and fix it himself.  He still treats it like it's indestructible though.   :smt044
