Looking for an attorney,  to help me get my will/trust updated. Been having some major health issues, we have it under control and on the way to recovery, I think. But it really hit home, that I need my affairs in order. Health aside, it is the responsible thing to do for my family. I could just google local lawyers, but I figured I would ask my second fam-ncka first. Not looking for free or discount, a man's gotta make a living  :smt002
I really don't know where to begin. I have been through family death and estate issues a few times, and one was well organized, and two were literal nightmares.
If we have a member in the field, that would be willing to sit down and walk me through the process and help me structure things appropriately, I would be obliged  :smt006

Heck, get a lawyer that's a member, and post a hookup!

I'm going to follow this thread. We need to do the same. The wife and I started to do a trust with a local lawyer group, but things just didn't feel right. I stopped the process and got my money back.

Thanks for getting this started Rich.

I don't have a lawyer to recommend but I can tell you, this is not something to put-off or do on the "cheap".  My wife and I are spending a ton of money trying to resolve issues around her mother's estate.  She had a pour-over will and trust but they were so poorly written that we haven't been able to untangle the assets.  It has been more than a year and there's no end in sight and the dreaded probate issue is unavoidable for us.  We had a revocable Living Trust and Pour-over will done in 2009 by a business associate of mine who has since retired from law practice.  Advance Medical Directives were also done at this time, however the medical directives are very simple and you really don't need an attorney to do them.  Take the time and spend the money to get a will and trust done right!  My mother-in-law didn't and her heirs are now paying the price, not to mention the taxes that will be paid to the government, unnecessarily.

My dad is an estate attorney. 30+ years experience. I know a few other NCKAers have used him for some probate stuff.

A piece of advice I have learned through GF's Parents trust, and the nightmare that came with it.  Right after one of the parents dies, contact the lawyer, make no assumptions that he/she will look out for you (they don't).  The valuation of a trust at the time of one spouse or parents death is crucial, don't ask me why I know this, her father put it off and know it is a problem to figure out stuff from years ago.
