Since a good number of fish we target in the ocean aren't line shy, is there any downside to fishing with a short (maybe 4 -6") wire leader for the chance at a toothy critter?

I like my leader to break when snagged and not the mainline.

i had a few big lings -head shake- and cut my leaders/line and most frustrating was the loss of a just tied primo swim bait-
So I went down the road of learning to crimp and buy the supplies for making my own HD steel leaders..it ads up $ if you make a lot/lose rigs...

now I found these in the link below-and gave them go...they shipped really fast and it turns out they are awesome  :smt003 for most rock-ling work and can be broken off if snagged if anything they are on the light side id guess 40-60lb etc....china made fast shipping great package with 3 lengths ....i'm on my second order in case they stop selling them...you will love these...no more making em----get a good supply for cheap too

I also have been using heavy mono and tying leaders with a snap at home and taking em in my pfd

I just like pre made wire  cause it has pre-made one tie and snap end...tying mono/flouro in the kayak is a drag if you in big rough conditions

I carry at least 10 pre tied leaders of 30-40lb leader with me. I never worry about having to tie on the water. I want to bee able to break of fif snagged.

I get the snag/break-off thinking.  I was thinking about having just a short section of wire at the end of my mono leader.  My main spool is braid.  I was just wondering if anyone used wire for anything other than sharks.  Thanks

If you check the mono leader for fray after each fish caught it will be a rare occasion a fish breaks off because of abrading through the mono. Exclude sharks from that though. I mostly tie jigs on on the water but pre-tie snaps to items like hoochies which require more more steps for correct attachment to leaders. Heavy braid to 80# mono to 30
3 breakable terminal leader.

+1 the snags is what I would be concerned about. I would rather break off a leader than 100 yard of line on my main line.

also I carry a 5" or so piece of broom stick that fits/slips nicely into on of my pfd elastic loops and stay put right on my chest area--if I get a snag that I'm gonna break or give it one last try to free etc..I paddle/reel till i'm on top of..slip out the dowel stick and give it 3 quick wraps and a tug...with my pole in my lap bail open/free spool...keeps my gloves hands from line cuts.keeps my main line from taking too much abuse tugging ...and 50/50% to get my gear free..but never loose the line to the swivel or leader and no more slipping hand line cuts or poles wrapped in braid getting tips broke--little stick as wide as my palm and pull 'anything' with it like lawn mower starter

That's pretty smart.  Thanks for the tip.
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

I have some short 8 inch wire leaders. and use my break off line next to that wire leader. That way I can break off and not much difference than f I didn't use a leader. I lost a winning fish when I baited with a live Octopus.
