Pushed off Capitola @ 7:30 weather was good but water viz was terrible. Water looked like pea soup. Planned on pulling out at noon and decided to stay till I caught something. Caught 2 mackerel and 1 rock of 9 hours in the big blue, nearly a skunk at least. Other fishers seemed to have the same luck, spotter a guy in a rental skiff doing the "why God, why" pose. Anybody know how to predict water visibility?

  Weather was great though.  :smt009

wow--day on the water at least--hate slow fishing
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

People aren’t supposed to look back. I’m certainly not going to do it anymore.”

Did you happen to see any large dorsal fins circling your kayak? Pretty sure every fish in Capitola was holed up shitting its britches today

I got skunked out of Capitola today. I'm still kicking myself for not bringing a sabiki rig... the macks were all over the place.

It's funny, I heard a bunch of choppers flying around. Made me wonder; now I know.  :x.

It was nice out, but the morning fog made it kinda creepy at times.  But hey, if the sea lions weren't freaking out, I wasn't gonna.

Funny, I had plenty of time to watch choppers. There were a few flying around

The macks have been everywhere there, I keep a rod with a silver spinner ready for fresh bait.

I rarely ever think about GWS while I'm out fishing... but had a wierd feeling yesterday out there.   Then got home and saw the video on FB.       I sure was glad there was another kayaker fishing near me.       Hi Mark,,,   :smt006   I was the guy in the white Raptor , not catching anything either.  :smt009

Hi Jim!  Sorry, I have a bad habit of forgetting to introduce myself on the water.

I'm glad you said it.  I thought it was just me feeling weird out there.  I normally give folks a wide berth while fishing, but yesterday I had this urge to stay close to other boats.  I definitely felt more comfortable being close by. Weird... but thanks for mentioned in it as it makes more sense now.  I figured I must've been a little hinked-up about getting spun in the fog/new area... but honestly, fog and/or fishing new grounds never  bothered me in the past because I have multiple nav methods.  Just couldn't put my finger on the cause of the feeling until you said it.  Now it makes a little more sense to me.

I'd planned to launch at Capitola yesterday, but at the last minute decided to launch from the SC harbor instead. Maybe that was a good move...

Anyways, fishing sucked for me too---just one lingcod, not counting a few mackerel that couldn't resist attacking a lure that was way too big for them.

I was out in Cap yesterday as well.  One point saw an adult sea lion wallowing on the surface.  when I approached, he dove down.  Second later a juvenile SL rocketed out of the water.

I thought
"That just what it would look like if that sea lion was trying to get away from a GWS."

But having just seen a big sea lion hanging out lollygagging on the surface only seconds before, I paid it no more mind.....Maybe the adult SL was watching the show underwater?  No GWS fins or other indiocations on the surface, and I did take a look around....

(shudder)

ps we were skunked, too.  Just mackerel.  Also saw, of all things ANCHOVIES out there at 35 and at 60 feet.

I was talking to a commercial fisherman buddy the next day.  He was in 60 fow just off the cement ship that same day.    Told me a seal leap into his boat and would NOT leave.
Wow,,, pretty exciting action,,, except for the fishing. :smt005

You guys probably wouldn't believe this but this morning about 8am around surfers reef, I was fishing a live mackerel and felt something pick up the bait then quickly zig zagging under my skiff. At first, I thought it was just a sea lion that took my bait, then it came across again and swam up near the surface. At that moment, I had a real good look at it and instantly saw that it was a great white shark around 6-7ft long? Maybe even more.. scared shitless, I immediately broke it off then motored away. After fishing for a while at another spot, I came back to the same vincinity and there were 3-4 other skiff and a kayak fishing there. The shark popped up again and again everyone can see its fin cruising the water. Apparently there was a seal of sea lion in the water and a lady in another skiff was frantically telling her man to motor over and try to save it?? Anyway... It was my first time spotting a great white.. Thank god it was just a juvenile.. But hooking up one? I would never imagine..
