A key consideration is mentioned in the disclaimer:

"Information and statements regarding dietary supplements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or health condition."

Products you buy over the counter can make any number of claims because they fall under the category of "Food supplements"  As such they explicitly note that the FDA has not assessed them to have any curative or preventative benefit.  If they were proven to be effective, they would fall under the category of other proven medications and have to be regulated by the FDA like all pharmaceuticals.

As I tell my patients, it probably won't hurt you, except in your pocket book.

It is important to take the gout attacks seriously and suppress future ones as effectively as possible.  The uric acid crystals incite a rip roaring inflammation--hence the acute pain.  In inflammatory responses, your own white blood cells start releasing enzymes and other chemicals that are very destructive to tissue.  Over time, with repeated attacks you can accumulate more and more damage to the underlying cartilage, ligaments and joint capsule which are critical structures of the joint.

Dealing with a massive case of Gout in my right ankle (again) ... second time in 2 years  :smt010  For those who have never had it, I wish you the best in NOT getting it.  Heard people get it in their big toe normally.  I got it in my entire ankle!  So bad that my ankle is rotate 30° in a "normal" standing position which I must admit HURTS LIKE HELL TO DO.

Rant over....  :smt012

Been a few years since my last attack.  Seriously moderating my intake of purines and increasing my water intake has helped a ton.  Colchisine worked wonders for my attacks, fortunate to not get the projectile shits from it.  Red meat & unfiltered beer are my triggers.  Been lucky seafood isn't a trigger.

Haven't figured out what my trigger is yet.  Know it isn't beer since it's been over a month since I had a beer (if Coors Lite qualifies as a beer), my red meat intake is normal or lower than normal.  Trying to intake more water now.  Been working on loosing some weight; about 10# so far.  More to go, though.
