"It is not typical to shut down the beach or evacuate the water after a shark attack, town spokesman Kyle Thomas said."

That seems idiotic...

Sharks in those areas are an ever presence unlike our sightings of GWS (with the exception of this past year).  When living in FL, you could stand on the pier and look down at all the kids playing in the waves (6' of less of water) and see, at times, hundreds of sharks just a few feet from them.  I'm assuming the attacks were bull sharks which are the most common.

Saw this on fox and got a little POd. That mannish creature was tearing that guy up. She kept asking about him letting his kids there and shaking her head trying to make it sound like he was a terrible parent that didn't care about their lives. "What are you doing about this??"

These are sharks. There are sharks in the ocean. Holy shit she made it sound like it was an attack by Isis that needed swift and harsh action.

I didn't watch video, but saw it live on local news (I'm in VA right now).  But doesn't surprise me since I used a CNN link that they were blaming the parents... what assholes.

The report I saw had an eye witness recount his story of seeing the attack and the kid coming out of the water screaming "is this real!?!? Is this real!?!?!?"... My God... I cannot imagine the shock and grief they are feeling right now.

Going back to not watching the news anymore... :smt009

Whatever your opinion is of FoxNews, the "we have to find someone to blame" mentality with this story is obnoxious. Lets blame the pier fishermen nearby who's bait drew them in. Lets blame the parents for letting their kids swim. Lets blame the nesting sea turtles that attracted the sharks. Good grief.

How about this ... sharks live in the ocean and need to eat stuff. We, on rare occasion, become their food when we venture into the ocean. Its pretty simple.

Its a terrible thing for those two kids, but how fortunate are they that off-duty EMTs were on the beach when this happened ? It sounds like without immediate professional medical attention, they both could have been fatal.

A warning would be nice but I don't think it should be necessary. Sharks are in the ocean. That shouldn't have to be said more than once.

I don't like big brother telling me what's best

Wow. News just said showed what they're doing there. Armed boats and helicopters patrolling to kill any "aggressive" shark. They define aggressive by any shark in and out of the surf line or within 100' of a swimmer. Wtf. People are dumb

I saw the city mgr tape, and to me it sounded like he was dancing around the situation. like the city mayor in Jaws did. I don't think it was about his parenting skills. The two attacks were so close in time. I don't think a warning could have helped in the second biting. I do think they should put signs up for a week. and let the beach goers decide what they want to do.
