Well hello.  My name is Kelly and I just moved to the Eureka, CA area.

Desire to get out onto the water and lack of funds for a yacht prompted me to buy a kayak.

I have zero experience in ocean kayaking (aside from a one day trip when I was like 9) and am hoping maybe someone out there wouldn't mind letting me tag along on an excursion sometime.

I live right in downtown Eureka and I think I have everything I need to go out kayak fishing except for a roof rack / mode of transportation for the kayak.   I still have to work on that.

So anyway, thanks for allowing me on your forum.  If you're in the Eureka area and wouldn't mind bringing a newbie along sometime, drop me a line.

Hi KC, and welcome!

It depends on what your desires and goals are as to how to go about kayak fishing.  You should consider hiring Eric Stockwell (loletaeric) as a guide to show you some of the ropes.

I don't really have any actual goals other than to get out and enjoy the water.
If I catch something, that's great, if I don't that's fine too..
Currently I am out of work, but when that changes I might look into hiring a guide.  :yak

Well, hello there.  I have been yak fishing exactly zero times... looking to change that.
Just bought the kayak a few weeks before I moved up here.  I have, um, what is this thing... an Old Town Predator MX.

You should get some experience on some freshwater before u get on the ocean.  It's not very forgiving!  It'll give u time to build skills and gear.  There are some good spots locally.  The Lagoons just north of Eureka are good spots to get on some beautiful freshwater.

Welcome Kelly!

LoletaEric is the man to fish with if guide services is ever in your budget.

We have a lot of people up there, keep an eye out for hook ups. I agree with the person suggesting freshwater experience, Saltwater is quite a bit more unforgiving!
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

Always looking for new people to fish with!

A lot of us here also lack funds for a yacht. But, somehow, some of us manage to spend almost as much on kayaks...
