Well Guys-

When I caught it... first impression was that it was a salmon on a test run up the river. The coloration led me to believe that it was a smallish chinook. I've never caught a steelhead before and the ones that I've seen were a little more greener on the back... not as purpley. After eating it though... I'm thinking that it was a stealy after all. It didn't taste like a salmon and the flesh was a little different... Now, I'm just not sure what it was... could've been a stealhead... could've been a salmon..ste. most likely a steal head is my guess... but, I could be wrong... again...

Chinook, dark mouth, caudal peduncle isn't wide enough to be a steelhead.

I haved fished Eagle Lake (Susanville) for a lot of years.  Sometime the trout taste like steelhead and sometime like salmon.  Depend if they are feeling on the shrimp or the tai-chub.  So, I don't think you can go on taste.
