flushmount installation

All,

I am going to install some flushmount rod holders in my yak today.  I read the instructions on the hook1 site and it seems very straight forward.  I do have a question though.

The screws seem a tad wide to just screw in without a pilot hole.  Is a pilot hole recommended or is it better to just screw it into the plastic?

Yeah, I think I'm gonna use one also.  The screws just look too thick and I don't want to stress the plastic too much.

I used pilot holes on mine--real tiny but, in additon to ensuring things go in straight minimizing stress, the additional measuring before cutting ('as in measure twice cut once') adds a safety factor. Fixing miuck-ups is not easy and you want those 'puppies' flush and angled right.

Yeah, before I put a hole in my hull it is gonna be measure 3 times!

I'm getting ready to install my first flush mounts. Using screws seems the easiest. Is this the preferred method in non-reachable locations?

MB, have the screws done the job for you?

Yeah the screws worked fine.  Gooped the heck out of it.

If I could get into the hull, I would have used bolts, but no dice of course.

Just use a lot of goop and don't overscrew.

Screws with lots o' Goop it will be. I thought of using well nuts but the extra height of the lip on the well nut seems like it would not allow the holder to sit flush and be a recipe for leakage.....or two tons o' Goop.

Not overtightening the screws is very important.
