I have had nothing but good luck when I was being accused of being in violation, and I was certain I was right, and they were misinformed. The key is to be nice about it.
Example: When we went clamming, I found a little-neck clam and kept it. Biologists took it because it was under 1 1/2" or so they thought. They measured it with their calipers, and it was 1.501" and the gal came running bringing me my clam back. On the way out, the warden picked up the clam and said "this looks really small." I said "If you think that is really small, look at this!" as I was about to show him an arrowhead I bought on Amazon.com, but apparently, he was extremely homophobic, as I dug in my front pocket, he told me to leave immediately.
JK, but I said it was measured twice, and it is right on the money. I also said he could do me dirty and tap the edges on the hood of the truck and get me for sure! He laughed, faked tapping the clam on the roof of my truck, and said "hope you have a back up plan for supper! And let me go.
Now if I had been an ass, or argumentative, I am sure I would have been ticketed, that clam was THAT close to being too small. I think it mostly boils down to your body language, and overall attitude during the exchange that sets the stage for their action and attitude towards the situation.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Must you prove innocence?  Shouldn't the state carry the burden and you get to chillax during the Man's case in chief, then rebut if needed?

seems every time I get in trouble with the law I have to prove innocence.

only had two bad encounters and it was the warden being the ass and argumentative. We just stayed calm and pointed out the reg and eventually they gave in. The first guy at Limekiln I think really did not know the regs. The second guy at Monastery Beach was trying to trick us.
