Just wondering if anyone ever paddles a tandem yak on a regular basis, and how it's done.  I would be doing a lot of ocean fishing/diving with just me in the boat, and some lake/bay/river with the GF.  Thanks all, -=Brian=-

Tarpon 130T. If your a big guy it is very doable. Semi wide open layout. Hull access sucks. I love mine.

I'm a peddler, not a paddler, but as far as Hobies go, tandems are made for two, not one.  "Just sayin'."

True stuff fellas, though you gotta be married to get a divorce, and I plan on doing neither.  Guess I'll just get two yaks...

Brian,

I fished solo from an OK Malibu Two XL for 4 years on both fresh and salt water.
We bought the yak so the wife and I could get on the water together :smt008
she slowly lost interest but I used it to fish solo alot.
That model has a solo paddler seat position in the middle,
very stable but not the fastest yak on the water :smt002
Lots of storage (add hatches) and deck space .
I purchased a Hobie Revolution 13 a year ago and love it.
Hope this helps :smt002
Like others here will tell you, Demo as many as you can,
if you see yourself going solo most of the time get a single first :smt002

I also have the Malibu Two and have fished it solo for the past year on lakes around the area.  Center seat works really well--no hatches-- and I mounted a rod holder on the right side for trolling.  It isn't fast but it's the only kayak I've ever had so I don't have anything to compare it to.  Plus, I'm not on the water for speed or paddling anyway.

Hi Brian:
I tried it once and it was like trying to paddle a Log.
Out of the water loading was just as bad. Too much freeboard
and is a chore in the Wind.
I would go light and fast like a OK Scupper Pro TW.
Two Yaks is more fun and safer.
                                                                          Regards

I bought Mainstream's tandem many years ago at Costco with two seats and two paddles for like $400.  It has been a great boat that I've crabbed, dove and fished out of both solo and with another adult and gear.  I've also caught salmon off of it.  There are better boats out there for one person and gear, but a tandem is a good option for all around use including multiple users at once.  Paddle as many different boats as you can prior to pulling the trigger.

Good luck.   :smt001

I ran across an older Hobie mirage tandem a few years back that has been plenty of fun.  It is very similar to the Oasis and offers nice stability plus payload.  Almost all the storage is top side (the hatches are just too small to do much with).  But... I can carry plenty of crabbing gear when I go solo and if someone wants to come along for lake fishing or just cruising around we are good to go.

It does ride funny with out a person/ballast in the front spot (more wave slap and such), but with the mirage drive, I can still get where I want to go fast enough.  With two, you can really make good time.

In summary I you are limited to one boat, it gives you the flexibility to do a lot and still take someone else out on occasion.

Have fun!
