I had a 4/3 surfing wetsuit that I was using for kayaking plus a few tentative attempts at freediving. I forgot it on the front porch after unpacking from a long day and someone took it.  :smt009

I know the cheapest option I could get away with (only for kayaking) would be something like a 3 mil farmer john, but since I'm interested in diving I thought it might make sense to buy a real freedive suit, and use the farmer john bottoms for kayaking. Good idea?

Any guidance on what to get or where to look? I'm in San Mateo-- should I look for local shops, or shop online based on measurements?

Thanks!

Okay.  Hate thieves so first you should get a bloodhound and shotgun and see if you could track down the culprit.

I think you will get too hot in a free dive FJ bottom. I get hot in mine in the water and when I paddle out to dive I get pretty dang hot too. I think this is an application for two suits.

I paddle with a 7 mil farmer John scuba suit and booties. I use the remainder of the suit for free and scuba diving as well. Been doing this for about 4 years now.

I bought a free dive open cell about a year ago and use it solely for free diving. This is now my primary diving suit and the 7mil scuba suit is my backup for multiple day trips.

Wearing the 7mil suit bottoms gets hot but I just undo the top portion so that it only covers me from the waist down. I also splash water on and in me to keep cool. If I get cold I just secure the top half back on again. I also take my top out with me too in case it gets cold. Putting the top on will make you nice and toasty but restricts your paddling motion.

My opinion is that if you have worn a dry suit for paddling and try this method you will think its too hot. But if you try this first you don't really know what you are missing with a dry suit.

I wouldn't buy a free dive suit and do this though. I find that they are more delicate than scuba suits. They are also more difficult to put on and require lube for donning.

If you really get into free diving then I would buy a free dive suit solely for free diving. That's if you think you will be diving past 20 ft on a regular basis. If not then I don't see a need to invest in one for your application.

Hope this helps
