I dried some lingcod skin in the past & wrapped a handmade wooden mug with it & then clear coat with Gloss Lacquer.  Turned out AWESOME!

I'd like to try this with the jaws next.

Having done the skin drying thing, this looks like a fun & similar project. I hope to try this on my next big ling.

Interest in the skin. I've gotten flat plywood like skin. Any way to keep it softer and use it for something?

the only way I've done it has pretty much the same return. It is more like salt curing it. Kirk Lombard of MonkeyFace news used it to bind the spines of his hand published works. It needs to be glues to a backing to actually use for something, but it doesn't tan soft like leather.
