Could have cut the "other" (NMEA 0183) cord off short & sealed the end off with a small dab of dielectric grease & heat shrink tubing or some of the adhesive lined heat shrink & pinch the tip closed while it's still hot.  As far as a kayak is concerned, there is no need for the NMEA 0183 cable interface.  When I've cut mine off, I typically leave ~3" pigtail of the cable left to work the heat shrink with.

I had same issue with my arm being a little short.
Than I removed the center hatch and that gave me
The extra inch I needed to get the job done. 8 screws
With a screw gun . breeze :smt001
