sardine salmon sea lion ect

what are the meanings of these positions. I've been kayak fishing in the ocean for 28 years . had my first skin diving suit at age 7. would have hoped my position could have at least been a little higher on the food chain then a sardine. grateful I didn't start off as a sand flea.
