I noticed more than 20 dead birds about 8 weeks ago and I emailed the lab to ask what is going on, they told me they had no clue but would look into it and contact me. I still have not been contacted since then.

Let Darwinism work.  Rehabbing sea lion pups, then putting them back into an out of balance environment (it's not like sea lions are endangered) seems counter productive to me.

Turn the table, and replace sealions with people. Same scenario,  dif species.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Now Rich, we can't address the real problem here. We have to wait for a Sharknado. I have always dreamed of getting brown bears reintroduced in to California. They would hunt seals on the beaches and maybe a few other beach mammals.

I could in turn hunt them! I really wish they would open sealions to limited hunting. I would enjoy having the opportunity to do that, but I wouldnt eat it and I have a problem with that.  :smt006

A seal would not go to waste. I hear the meat is great dog food. You get an awesome skull mount. The pelts could cover a chair. Best of all you could render the blubber to make candles....similar to crisco candles. Then you could have a romantic dinner by seal blubber candle light .......and if your date sticks around after eating a meal to the smell of a burning seal blubber, you know you have a true keeper!

All those Inuit can't be wrong. Perfect solution toward pinniped reduction.

There used to be a Dog food plant where Diablo Canyon is here in San Luis Obispo County.
As for the brown Bear I have heard the state have studied the Idea of reintroducing Grizzly bears in this state. I wish they would do it in the center of two towns Los Angles and San Francisco. Sorry if you live there. No matter where they put them in this state somebody will get killed.

Nature needs to take it's course.  Rescuing sea lions on this scale and for these reasons is going to really screw up the environment even more than it already is.

Rescuing a sea lion that was hurt by a boat, for example, is the right thing to do.  That's not nature at work.  My guess is that the sea lion population has grown faster than the environment would be able to sustain it and this is just the way things go to get them back on track.

Reminds me of forest fires; reduce the fires until the environment is ripe to explode and we have catastrophic fires instead of natural, smaller cleansing fires.

Hunting sea lions in California? I guess it's ok to day dream :smt001

The ones around here probably have a subtle salmon flavor. :smt013

It is generally thought that there were 5 to ten thousand California sea lions in 1970. Today there are over three hundred thousand from Baja to Astoria. The Marine Mammal Protection Act enacted in the 1970s stopped most of the commercial fleet from shooting them as well as made it very difficult to kill troublesome sea lions feeding on salmon in raceways below dams. Given the positive PR they have acquired from marine mammal shows as well as being a tourist attraction in places like Fisherman's Wharf, there will be very little human effort put into population control. However, look for viruses such as Leptospirosis  to sweep through the herds at some point particularly if they are weak from inadequate food sources. I would be wary of them this year while kayak fishing. Hunger and competition for food will make them increasingly aggressive.

+1   Well said.   Humans may get added to that equation soon...
