I've got the gopro hero 3, plain vanilla white version. After using it for a year, I've found that I really need a remote. But, it looks like the new gopro remote is only for the hero 4, and the older remote seems to have some issues (short battery life, and non-replaceable battery for starters). So, I'm wondering what people here use and/or recommend. Thanks.

I stopped using the remote for my GP3. Enabling the wifi used too much battsry from the cam.

Mount the cam on a pole where u can reach up & push record the moment after hooking a fish. With a battery backpack the cam will stay powered for over half a day on standby.

+1

I was using my iPhone with the GoPro app as a remote control but it would drain my phone battery as well as the GoPro battery quickly.

I have the 4 and love my remote.  I got the battery bac pac and can leave my camera on for 5 hours shooting video every now and then.  But if I turn the camera on and off it will last about 7 or 8 hours.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

Thanks for the replies.

Like last year, I'll again mount it within reach and manually press the button. It seems like there's got to be a better way, but it'll have to do for now.

I found a possible interesting way to handle this. The Pebble smart watch. You can download the gopro remote app to it and operate the camera from a watch. It costs $99 so only $10 more than the gopro remote, and it has a lot of other features.

I am still exploring the potentional of this option.

That's interesting. If you give it a try, be sure to post some info on how it works out.

I love my Pebble watch.  I don't use it for my gopro, but I love it for every day use.
