Hey,

I'm doing my first salt-water kayak fishing tomorrow, thought I'd start slow nearby from Port of Redwood City. Fishing for smaller fish for starter (jacksmelt, etc.).

Any spots that could be more promising than others?

Thanks!

P.S. I understand I can't fish for RCG and most of big boys, and not planning to. Have a net for compliance. Anything else which is common knowledge, but I might be missing as newbie for salt water fishing, so I don't get ticketed ;)

If you make it out of the channel and  into the bay, be very cautious about the  wind! Also watch the tides, as it makes for a hard trip back to launch ramp, after fishing, paddling  against the  tides.

Just use a sabiki and 1 ounce at the bottom and float the top..   I saw alot of boil at oakland airpoirt a few weeks ago.. But Did not wan to catch them and was too lazy to tie a sabiki rig..

Snapper is correct.. I had to paddle back on outgoing tide..  2 miles back.  It was difficult, and I am fairly fit.

If you dont have anyone to go with.. You can always hop the bridge and join us at ARW tomorrow.

I'm sure you have your PFD, but don't forget your "state required, audible signaling device..." (whistle).

Thanks! It took me a while to find out what ARW is (though I succeeded at the end) ;)

I probably will not make 7ish tomorrow, but would love to join some other day. Are you guys announcing it here, or it's regular? Thanks again!

Yeah... it's surprisingly shallow in spots. Did you get stuck in mud or did you roll the kayak and discover you could still stand up?   :smt003

How was the fishing?

Hehe.. No, first we tried to find a spot just outside of a main channel, on both sides, because main was completely taken by sailors and rowers - at the time (mid-tide) most availability places were about 4 ft deep, or less. Then we went to the bay and in most places it was less then 6 ft deep. And yes, when my  friend tried to unhook the net and stood in the mud it swallowed his sandals :) lessons learned, need to go at different times and maybe different place, still it was lots of fun :)

Took the kid out just before sunset, it was gorgeous. And we caught a shark - now trying to identify it ;) (it very small, less than 30", so went back home)

Nice!

Google leopard, brown smoothound, and 7gill sharks if you haven't already. It was most likely one of those.
