Would honesty be the he best policy in this case?

Short term gain or long term pain.  if you weren't honest you wouldn't be sharing this with us.

Guilt and loss of self-respect last a looooong time, maybe forever. I think you know what to do.

I used to know the Shimano customer Service guy by name!  He had a picture of jellyfish on his cubicle wall my daughter had painted for him.

This, because my Shimano Compre's always had a tendency to break  (Damn halibut).  I got a double order on Compre warranty return once, and he told me "Don't worry about it.  Just keep it." 

So I was honest, and one rod up.
