Are you sure those "bites" weren't just your sinker rolling in the surf or the action of the waves?  I hope I'm not insulting you by bringing this up, but many a surf newbie has been tricked like this.

Nope, not insulted at all. I'm sure of the bites, many years of rubber work in in the river  curents. New rod I was using was real sensitive, making it easy to tell the difference between the bottom, current, and bites. Made mental notes to make sure this wasn't happening. Throw it out there Allen, I'm a big boy with thick skin.

Seems to me like these particular fish rarely ever swallow the lure they just lip it so you just get many hits before they happen to hit the hook. I enjoy it, you can tell they are bites, it's when you aren't getting any action for a long time that sand and currents start to feel like bites...
