I have a friend that Invited me up to fish New Melones lake. I was wondering is trout fishing in season there, and what to use? I hate to take trout gear, and find out it would have been better to target Bass. He has a tin can boat were using, and both of us have never been there before.

New Melones in February? I sure as heck wouldn't be targeting trout,  but that's just me.

Trout fishing is great right now at Melones. Launch for free at the 49 bridge and paddle back in Coyote Creek arm. Throw Thomas Bouyants, kastmasters little cleos etc. Drag a toplined  J7 firetiger rapala. Hook up a 1 oz trolling sinker with flashers and a cop car needle fish. This will get you down 10 ft.  Nice full tailed bows that are great eating compared to the Amador frankenfish.

New Melones should be great for trout right now. I don't know what GrimmKeeper is talking about, unless he is hinting at the troph bass that can be caught in NM this time of year.

Rolling shad can be really productive for both bows and Browns at new melones. River arm under the bridge or Carson cove, mouth of Mormon creek are all good places to try this tactic + 1 on all the gear mentioned by ppickerell

Several LMBs in the 12-15# range have been landed on swimbaits over the last 1.5 months or so.

That's one way to do it, I usually tie a small treble hook to the end of the rig, then tie a small egg hook to the main line with dental floss tightly so that you can slide the hook up and down the line, yet have it remain in place once you stop applying pressure. By hooking the treble into the tail and then hooking the mouth up on the egg hook, you should be able to put a bow on the shad which will cause it to roll. The first minute of the video in this thread shows what I mean
