Hi all,

I'm still in the market for a good fishing kayak. I have been looking at the Hobie outback and the Revo 13. I know Hobie's are Beautiful kayaks but they are just so expensive. So I have concluded that I'm going to demo them, but most probably not buy one. Is there any other kayak that performs well in ocean conditions in Santa Cruz and also on lakes. I have been looking at the OK Trident 13 and I really like that kayak. Really appreciate all the help. I would not know what to do without you guys!

Thanks,
Aidan

You won't be disappointed with the Trident 13 in Santa Cruz.

Demo all the kayaks you might possibly want.

The T13 is a well round kayak and many here own this yak.

You won't regret purchasing either one of those kayaks. Like sonny says the t13 is a well rounded yak, the revo is fast and damn fun. For a first yak the revo is like having a Benz for a first car. Nothin wrong with that  :smt002

If you are a budget and want a boat to fish inshore and freshwater, the Trident 13 would be on the top of a short list IMHO. Other yaks are out there, Ws's Cobra's Jacksons... but the performance/weight/cost factors decrease their attractiveness. The bell's and whistles add cost, weight, and mechanical complexity which lead to mechanical failure.

I don't encourage Hobies as a first kayak because paddling skills are an important part of the sport both from a fishing and safety perspective. Hobies are a good second boat after you have mastered paddling and the surf zone. Hobie guys are going to disagree but the Mirage drive does fail periodically and if you are miles off shore and don't know how to efficiently paddle, well you are SOOL. Pay attention to weight when you demo kayaks. At the end of a long day you still have to rack your boat.

There are some decent prices on Craigslist in your area. Also check with the rental companies they are typically selling off last years inventory. Kayak Connection has a few Trident 15's for a good price. If you buy one there they will give a discount on accessories.
