I just got my kayak this past Saturday.  (woo hoo!!!)
Being a first time kayaker, I was pretty psyched and tempted to take this out on Sunday.

But having been reminded by you guys, I decided to make sure to spend at least a day in practicing self rescue... that and the fact that I didn't have a VHF.

So, where's a good place to practice?  I'm around San Jose.

Thanks guys for sharing!  You've possibly save my life this past weekend.

For the ocean, you might try stillwater cove at Pebble Beach.

and yes, NCKA and NCUH do save lives, which is why I support and use these sites mostly in instead of facebook for yak/diving/abalone/etc  . . . .  The threads here are organized and thorough.

I recommend practicing in a freshwater as a starter where the water is typically more flat.  If you go to Calero Reservoir (south of 85/87), you can practice in the shallow area (left of the dock).

Take a Sea Kayak Class - Re-entry & Rescue at Monterey Bay Kayak. I learned a lot when I took the class.

Yeah, I'll definitely take a self rescue class.

Do any of you use the self rescue ladder?
It sounds like it could really come in handy in terms of getting back on.

Unfortunately, yes. But, I have found them to be pretty easy going. Of coures, YMMV.

Btw, if you do go there, don't pay to park. There is always free parking across the road.
