Damn!  Close call.  Sounds like he was out solo.  I continue to believe the most important safety "item" is a buddy.  It seems odd that he was wearing a dry suit but there was no mention of a radio call for help.  Considering the cost of a dry suit, a radio is pocket change.

Actually it said sheriffs rescued him but the cg is definitely out there in force. Saw a double heli rescue near Trinidad a month or two ago.
