Well today was my birthday and i could not think of a better way to spend it than to go fishing with my dad.  We headed out to franks track in the delta at about 745   and got to fishing at 8.  Fished the rest of the out going tide for stripers on the fly-rod, using a white and brown clouser, my dad was using a green and white.  Only caught two black bass on the white and brown and no action except one good hit on the green and white.  Once the tide changed the wind picked up and blew us off the water by 300ish.  All and all a good day did not see or catch any stripers but still had fun hopefully the cooler weather will help the bite, or kill off some of the weeds O ya we were fishing toullies banks as well as weed breaks in the open water

Just for the record it's Franks Tract as in tract of land. A guy named Franks tried homsteading there and farming decades ago and a big flood broke the levees and flooded his homestead. That's why you sometimes can see the fencelines and tree lines. Frank's Tract. Honor his memory and pioneering spirit even if he failed against Mother Nature.

here's the story (what's the use of history if it's forgotten--so I am passing it on):

Delta Morsels
Franks Tract

Franks Tract, about 3,500 acres, was another of the Delta island farmlands until its levee broke two years in a row in 1937-'38 and it was not reclaimed. Often referred to as a "submerged lake", it now is part of the State Parks system. Two electrical power lines that ran across the property (the "long pole" and the "short pole" lines) had poles spliced to pilings and were a regular source of problems for PG&E. Boaters would get their masts and radio antennas tangled in the electrical lines, and one even filed a lawsuit. PG&E kept raising the height of the lines, then in1958 re-routed the lines and hired divers to cut off the pilings one foot from the bottom.
For several years the U.S. Navy had a practice bombing range with floating targets out on the Tract. Vita-Peat used to "mine" peat dirt from the Tract to sell to gardeners to nourish their plants. Some duck hunters place floating duck blinds out on the Tract. And it long has been a favored striper fishing area. Delta lore has it that there still are prop-eating tractors out there, but I doubt if there are any more left to discover.
The property originally was developed and owned by John C. Franks. So, if you spell Franks with an apostrophe s, you have misspelled the name. It correctly is Franks Tract.

Fished Franks Tract last weekend from a friend's PB with flies and did O.K. on numbers but all dinks to schoolies. Lost a really strong one that we never saw also. Since I'm a newB with the yak, Franks seems a bit daunting from the kayak point of view...so much water! Learning where to launch would really help. There are stripers there though. In fact, there was a 54" - 55lb fish landed and released on Saturday by a fly fisherman from somewhere in the Delta. A few million more eggs for the future, maybe. Tom

You may think about Big Break near the city of Oakley.  Not to far from Franks.  It is smaller water and more protected.

I used to fish there (Big Break), Franks, and Sherman's Island growing up.  In my Dad's boat and the rental's.

Big Break was a favorite for my Father and Uncle . They loved fishing just inside the old submerged barge leading into the channel for srtipers and cats. Fond memories of that place. Every Wed. just like clock work.

Blue spike,

I launch out of there pretty regularly launch fee is $10.00. I am not sure if it is because we bring in two kayaks on one truck or they are just getting used to seeing me but they only charge me 10.00 to launch two kayaks. I like it because once you are in you can leave anytime - not so useful now but during the summer when we play in Big Break after dark it is nice. Launch ramp has a light as well as the parking area. Once the park district reopens the park you can launch out of the neighborhood near the school off of Vintage Parkway for free ( I can't think of the name of the road) but if you are on Vintage coming from Big Break turn left just before the school and follow down and around the turn. You park on the water side across from the houses. Can't miss it, it has a low wooden fence right next to the sidewalk.

Originally I got into fishing to fish.
