I just took a look at the surfline pay forecast site.

It gives a graph of swell height by the hour.

by the end of the day saturday, a big swell that persists all through sunday.

but saturday morning is looking pretty feasible even for XJ-14 and LM perhaps.
certainly more southerly spots.

narrow tiime window and a long time between now and then, but if you want to crab or
fish in the ocean, there might be a saturday morning window.

probably not a good idea for newbs or more cautious folk.

I might fish that day, not sure yet. gotta be a few more lings showing up from the deep and
maybe still a halibut out there.

How bad is sunday going to be? I was hoping to leave my traps out overnight on saturday night and pick up sunday morning? Maybe drop in 120 - 150 off capitola?

capitola should still be totally do-able,  it takes an extreme swell to not be able to get out there. You should be fine there.

I don't think it will be okay at exposed launches tho.

you'd have to paddle a long ways to get to 150 feet leaving from capitola tho. you might have to drop before you get that
deep.  capitola is tucked way back in there.

you might have some luck with ling trolling gear just outside the kelp beds. That has been good to me. Do not jig big iron and
expect to catch much!

the parking is the main battle in capitola. That and trying not to go postal on any gaper tourists that get in your way. I park up on the mesa to the west, wheel my kayak down, it is a 15 minute adventure. if you get there early you can park, later, fuggedaboutit.
yes, you can launch off the wharf itself, but then you have to contend with actually talking to people,  :smt011.

I had been thinking rockfish on the open coast saturday morning, but
right now the saturday window on the open coast is closing.
they have the swell coming up in the morning now. I knew that wouldn't stay open for 5 days... epecially after I posted...
talk about jinxing it!

I am now thinking I am surfing saturday, not fishing.  I am not ready to do the crab thing, I just pull out my wallet for that!

Sunday does not look as big as they had it forecast earlier, but does not look like I will be fishing on any unprotected part of the coast sunday either..

Hmmm,   8-12 knot SOUTH wind on saturday morning? even capitola won't be too pretty because of that.

maybe I'll be sleeping in that day.  then smoking rockfish...  :smt004

sometimes it's surfable south of moss landing harbour as wind gets sucked out of
the salinas river valley and it blows SE there (offshore).

things are not looking too good this weekend for ocean adventures.

If I had a good surfing kayak I'd try Montery State Beach for some surfing. If I wanted to fish, I'd go out of HMB but only after scoping out the reef break from the beach south of the launch. San Luis & Forebay are out--gonna howl this weekend. I'll be inland this weekend. Mendo looks liek the ticket unless 'family stakeholders' veto. Then it will be SCR or Lex for Bass or Crappie.

good luck blue, I posted a 'how was your salmon season' thread over in General Talk.

I got one up to the surface, pulled the hook, that was it for me.

I do feel like I'm ready if a good season happens next year tho, learned a lot, got my kayak
all setup, etc.

Thanks for saying that, I got one to the surface after 4 gnarly trips out at moss and pretty much called it a season on that.

maybe I live too far south for really good salmon fishing, hopefully next year Moss will be kinder to me.

Those rockfish are just too obliging. I don't have a lifetiime of fishikilling under my belt like you so that rockfishing is still pretty
special for me.  I have to chose between a pile of rockfish or a salmon, it's not easy to choose the salmon attempt.

Well, I hope I get one next season!

Z, I usually save the lane for late winter, once the crowds are satiated and start to stay home!
But I do surf it, both on a longboard and a gun depending on conditions. maybe I will see you
there if I don't see you fishing first!

the forecast for saturday has been changing daily on surfline. now has smaller surf, but
strong SE wind forecasts which will mean bumpy lumpy at south exposed spots like the lane,
and SC in general. not to mention wet and dirty run-off.  :smt012

there are a couple spots in my range that work on SE wind, high tide and big swell tho, maybe I will try for one of those,
still not sure what to do yet, gonna have to be a last minute decision, and even then, no guarantee.
