I was surfing the net and found some info regarding lure colors. The writer of a blog talks about how most colors wash out based on water/weather/distance.  The writer doesn't list any scientific references or anything but most of it seems consistent with what I've read posted on NCKA by experienced fisherman, but I found it helpful.

Anyway, instead of posting the link (dunno if it's allowed), I thought I'd share the summary for other novices like me:

Sunny Days = silver or gold for reflection, nearly disappear during cloudy days
Cloudy Days = flourescent lures do better because of the higher UV during cloudy days
Murky Water = black lures
Brown Water = darker colored lures
Algae/Green Water = two tone lures for contrast
Visibility degredation based on distance/depth =  Red spectrum disappears first, Orance spectrum next, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Black.

Another blogger covered the basics of Bass Lures, which I also found helpful:

Top Level water: Propeller or Popper baits
Middle Level water: Crankbaits (diving and lipless) or Spinnerbait
Bottom Level water: Weedless, worms, or "creature" baits (crawfish/brush hogs)

He also says to ignore all the crazy colors and just get lures that match what you'll find in the target enviroment, ie natural colors.

Nice Eric!  Do you recall if it was sunny out?  Or if the water was clear/murky?

Those recommendations come close to what the old guys used to tell me.
Not always intuitive either.
Bright day - bright fly, as in silvery or gold  (or lure)
Dark day - dark
muddy water - flouro or really dark, see night time
night time - black or deep purple
The other thing i had drilled into me was that the most important color was the one you believed in.
