Post a time when you decide when you will be at Ocean cove Sunday, I may be able to get away for a short morning trip.

Norm, I will be at Ocean Cove at 7:30 am.  Ocean Cove is about 3-4 miles north of Fort Ross....

Hey, you're the first one I heard getting a lot of fish at Van Damne.  My freedive/spearfishing buddies shun that place; I guess they haven't found your fishing hole.  I usually make reservation in January for summer camping in Mendocino....; man, you live in Windsor!, Mendo is just your neck of the woods!!!

Hey Norm,

Is that your kid in the pic of the kayak with you.  How old is your kid now?  My son is 10 years old now.  I've been taking him in my kayak for the past 4 years now in the ocean since he was 6 years old.  The first 3 years, I was freediving/spearfishing while he sat in the kayak with all his snacks in the dry bag; sometimes napping in the yak.  The last 12 months, we started fishing/angling & dungeness crabbing from the kayak.  We had a lot of 'fun' days kayak/fishing...usually the lings (3 separate occassions) that got away are the most fun memories for us because we were 'newbie', you know what I mean.

18-lb ling is pretty big.  We had 2 of those that got away so my biggest ling was just a shy 8 pounder...  not a big bragging right.

We'll talk again.

Hey Guys,

Yeah, that is my son Andrew (Drew).  His is 9 (4th grade) and has been a passenger on my yak for the past 4 years or so.  I have mainly taken him out in some of the bays down south, the Russian, and lake fishing.  The thumbnail pic is us up at Lake Sonoma doing some winter steelie fishing, great fun!!  My son actually likes our 8 foot dingy better than the yak as he has more room to move around, but he still goes out with me sometimes.  I have had my wife and Drew on her kayak a few times while I dove from mine, that was cool.

I hope in the next few years to get him into his own boat, he loves to fish, so it shouldn't be too hard.

Hope you guys had a good dive at Ocean Cove, I had "honey do's" to complete so I couldn't make it.  I hope to get over there the weekend after next, there are some really nice afternoon minus lows to help reach the deeper rocks.  Let me know if you guys are interested, I for sure want to check out the area.  I'll be heading up to Fort Bragg this Friday with the family as my son is out of school for Veterans Day.  We are going to go to glass beach so they can pick through the rubble (keeps my wife entertained for hours) while a friend of mine that lives there and I try a dive.  If you have not been there, just the naturally tumbled glass on the beach is worth the trip.  Both of us have only gone diving there once before, so this is mainly ane exploratory trip.  Welcome to join us if anyone can make the long journey.  It is nice living in Windsor, close enough to a lot of great water, both salt and fresh, for lots of great day trips.

Take care.....

Norm

Hey Norm,

The forecast this weekend is not looking pretty.  I was in Mendocino last year during 10-foot waves breaking at Big River.  We could hear the thundering waves all the way to our campsite @ Mendocino campground.  If you are still going this weekend, your best bet is to check out Noyo Harbor.  It is calm and easy launching on the right side of the cove there even during heavy swell.  The only downside is the the fog horn is constantly blowing and your family will not enjoy staying at the beach there...

Once you get down the harbor, drive underneath the bridge towards the beach parking lot.

Good Luck!
