I would think there wouldn't be a lot of people that choose to roadkill an animal to eat it.  A heavily bruised piece of venison isn't too high on my list.

came up on a very fresh roadkill deer years ago in Missouri.  it was still alive but back was broken.  I killed it, butchered it and we ate it...

dumb law

Well then, you didn't roadkill it.  You poached it after you clipped it with a car.   :smt064

Way back I had an uncle who just so happened to be on the police force in town and did the graveyard shift now and then. I never thought to ask why we were eating fresh venison in March. Hehe. When I was 18 I picked up a fresh one on 37 @ Atherton Ave. the back straps and the shoulders and neck was pretty tasty. Still warm or I would pass. The bladder had ruptured. The intestines too.  It was at night.

no, I killed it after an art teacher clipped it with her car.  Then I called the local wildlife officer and got a permit for posession.  long story, lots of blood and gore, final result - tasty venison

I'm just busting your balls.  I think I've heard your story before.  In fact, weren't we trading stories ...

A couple years ago a family member saw a deer get hit in Caz.  Girl got out of the car, knife in hand with an "I got this look" on her face.  You know where this story goes.

I suppose at that point you were taken advantage of and your car stolen?  :smt003

I think the worry is that if the person who runs it over can take it home, then it creates incentive to run over animals.

YEAH, That is worth the damage that a animal causes to a vehicle when hit...
Your probably right but its just another Stupid Cali law

Depends on the vehicle and the type of animal. Someone with a giant steel-bumpered pickup probably would have no problem hitting a fawn or small doe. I think it's a good law for that exact reason. Lottery makes more sense.
Give me a break! yeah I can see it now as soon as it's legal I'm gonna put a steel bumper on my ride and cruise the interstate looking for prey. It's a dumb law.

I didn't necessarily mean you. And personally, I don't care if people pick up roadkill. I've eaten scavenged venison on several occasions. One was awesome. The other tasted horrible. If I found a still-warm deer by the side of the road, I'd certainly be tempted.

This reminds me of someone I knew who found a freshly speared (by someone else) undersized ling, so he kept it and got caught with it and ticketed. If the law allowed us to scavenge other people's undersized bycatch, some fishermen would take advantage; they'd kill small or protected fish, then claim that it just washed up that way.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
