So went with the Elite 5 HDI...

Looks pretty sweet cant wait till next week when I get to take it and the new yak out...

Wanted to use the Lowrance ready system and have the option for DI for fishing lakes.

The Transducer is separate from power source cable. There is essentially 3 cables that would be exposed on top of the deck

I would like to cut and tape the cord on the left in this photo as to not have to seal it. 2 cords easier to seal then this third.

Anyone ever cut this cord out.

Thanks guys.
RH

Yes.  I have cut the NMEA 0183 cord on almost all of my cables.  I (typically) leave about 2-3" exposed from the plug.  I dab a little Dielectric grease on the exposed wire tip (just a little) and cover it with ~1" of adhesive lined heat shrink, leaving about 3/8" sticking out from the end of the wires.  I heat shrink it & while the heat shrink is still hot, I pinch the 3/8" (exposed) end of the heat shrink thus "sealing" the end of it all shut.  Seems to work well for me.

For those not familiar with what this "extra" cable is:  NMEA 0183 is a way of transferring data back & forth among marine electronics.  Sort of "older" technology & replaced, for the most part, by NMEA 2000 (N2K) which is more "plug & play" technology that doesn't (generally) require splicing of wires and allows for faster & more lines of data transfer.  How & why is it used?  One way is to allow GPS data to be transmitted to a VHF radio for example.  Useful on a kayak ... not really ... hence the reason I cut this extra cable (almost) off.

Don't cut off the other set of wires (Black/Red/Yellow) :smt002  Black to the battery Negative Terminal; Red to the battery Positive terminal; Yellow not used (cap it off similar to above mentioned method).

Hope this helps a little

See you're other post, no need to cut with the Hobie plugs, they seal just fine on the double cords.
Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

Thanks Bill. Snipping away...

Tim, Wanted to leave it as one hole in the yak with the pre-rigged one's that come with the newer Hobies Thanks for the pics looks good...

You could use the hobie feedthru cap & leave the NMEA wire intact too.  Doesn't harm anything.

Other methods I have heard of to seal the ends of unused wires include heat shrink (as mentioned), hot melt glue & plastic-dip just to name a few.

I've had others ask why I leave a few inches when I "snip":
   1)  Leaves me a little something to attach the heat shrink seal to
   2)  IF I ever pull the unit & sell to someone who does need the NMEA 0183, they have a little something left to splice onto.
   3)  Worst case scenario, they can always replace the power cable & it isn't all that cost prohibitive since the transducer is separate of the power cable with all the newer units.  No longer do you have to replace the transducer AND the power cable as 1 unit.

The timing of this thread is perfect, I just received my unit today.

I have a quick question also, about the microSD card. It doesn't look like the card that was shipped will fit into the unit.

Am I missing something? Is it even important?

The Navionics micro sd card is inside the sd card. After uploading the Navionics charts to your unit use a blank card for your data. That way you wont corrupt the Navionics card.

The info on that Navionics card does not "upload" to the unit.  To see the charts on the card, the card must be in the unit.  FYI
