Me and the six million hurts man had a plan to fish this morning, but my younger kid spent the night pukin'

Being somebody that runs on WAF fumes, I decided I better cancel. call the gregster @ 4:30 a.m..  no go.

But the kid perks up a bit mid-day and I note that the swell is 4.9/10 and the wind is under 15 and my shit is still in the truck, so I head out  @ 1 p.m. and only run one or two camry's off the road in my haste.

I get to secret spot XJ-14 around 2, AKA happy hollow, and there are some whitecaps, but waves are fairly puny. decide to launch!

I get ready and I am out the mouth @ 2:30, but I know they get uptight at sunset so I don't have much time.

6 rockfish hit my offerings and I let one go and keep the others.

I lose a big one because my teaser, a lefty deceiver, a big saltwater fly, fails and I was horsing it. arg.

made a few other tactical errors, but considering my haste, I do okay.

I am tossing 2 coppers, one a whopper, a black and two blues into the cooler at 4:30 and out of the parking lot at 5 as the sun goes down.

sorry no pics, I got a lot to do tonight still.

Best,

J

Hey, that's _MY_ secret spot and I named it first:  :director:  Busta Cap :director: :smt018 :icon_rr: I got 8 & 11-pound Lings and 7-pound Vermillion there and others have done even better (they spied on me and learned the coordinates--the rotters ) :smt011

short and sweet Ya gotta love it! How did the fly fail? If it was on a loop it had to be the Hook? J you gotta work harder on the rice burners (Camry) good follow thru on still squeeking in a trip and I have found out that the kids don't remember all those times you put everything else on the back burner. not that it's not a requirement that you do, just remember their way tougher then us! yeah, marmot, you did well that day! freezer empty yet? mine's not,  :smt003.

I got a real secret spot I will show you if you like, just bring your shark repellent.

the fly was not used as a fly, just hung up above the main lure as a second rockfish offering. I do not know how to fly fish, but I just liked the look of those things one dark december night while perusing ebay. They do kick ass for a rockfish shrimpfly/teaser. seem to be durable and have little water resistance etc, a perfrect teaser above the iron or swimbait.

it was on 2 inches of 25lb yozuri hybrid and had caught a mess of blue and black rockfish without re-tying. the uni-knot on the head failed, I'm sure it was way abraded. my bad.

I did not anticipate a big fish (ling or whopper vermillion I would guess) hitting it.  when I felt it let go, I thought for sure it was my main lure, a well-used and almost white megabait live jig. But no, that lure lives to lure another day.

J, at least you go out and had fun which is more than I did  :smt012
Though 4 of us did run through rescues at SCR--we'll be posting something soon I think--but that ain't fishing :smt009.

We all have a tendency to use the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" on knots--the problem we forget is that when they break it's usually from a good-sized fish and then it's too late  :crybaby2:. I have lost many a large Trout on a light tippet with that method :BangHead: Good reminder to inspect knots and line before each trip.

As for the freezer, its getting low for sure. I like to get more before the season door closes. :smt007

Knots, knots, knots.....

Back in my more serious bass fishing days, when I was anal about everthing I would retie after every single fish and every two hours regardless.

I got pretty good at tying quality improved clinch knots fast in those days.

I have tried to switch over to the palomar knot, but the clinch is so ingrained it is tough for me to force myself.

Anyway, sounds pretty good for a short trip.

Your secret spot terminology is outdated. Please note that XJ-14 has since been reclassified to Flemish Cap 1567.
