I use a very simple but effective system to anchor my kayak. I have a Hobie with the built in rod holders in the rear. I made an extension out of 1'1/4 pvc, so it's several inches higher than the deck. I cut a slot in the tube so it fits into the hole real snug by contracting as I push it in. For the anchor I riveted a jam cleat on the gunnel near the seat. The anchor rope goes around the the extension tube and the anchor hangs off the side of it. I can bail out quickly by pulling it off the jam cleat, and tossing it. I keep a float reel on the rope so I can recover the rope. What I like about this anchor position is the kayak angles to one side, because it comes off the rear side of the kayak. When you anchor off the middle rear of the kayak the slightest shift in current or your weight can make it swing hard. This is very unsettling and can throw you off balance real quick. Freaks me out. With the defined angle to the current the sudden swings are greatly reduced. I also limit the size of my anchor, so if it can't hold me, the currents too quick. If you are not comfortable with river currents, then I suggest you stay away from anchoring in it. What ever you do, don't over react to any sudden shifts.
