Cool video Jim! Lucky you getting to dive midweek. I was at work wishing I was OTW with the homies. My company hates vets...(and America :smt011)

Thanks guys!

The big lions can be pretty scary...obviously if they want a fish that you have on your spear or stringer there's not much you can do about it....

I've scared away harbor seals and ripped fish out of their mouths, but think if one of those big boys wants it he will just take it.

But, with that said, I haven't had a bad experience so far...been buzzed and startled, but have managed to avoid getting any fish stolen...but am pretty sure it will happen one day.

Jim

I've always wondered how a diver is able to determine the minimum length of a ling.  Perhaps the sea lion was hoping it was short and you were going to have to release it?

I've always wondered how a diver is able to determine the minimum length of a ling.

Good question!

I think the more time somebody spends looking at fish underwater the better they get at judging size.

Rule of thumb is if in doubt, don't shoot it.

With this particular fish I saw it on my first drop of the day in the crack and it was lined up sideways so I had a good view of length (not just looking at the head straight on) and knew it was not big but definitely legal.

Told Mike to go check it out but it had disappeared.  :smt012

Then I went and shot the cab and came back and looked in the crack again and the Ling was back.  This time I decided it was worthy of getting shot.  :smt004

It was 25 inches so not big, but good enough to provide some nice meat. And it tasted great last night.

 :smt003

Saw several others about the same size later on, but held off cuz was hoping to find a bigger one...which I never did.  :smt005

Sincerely,

Jim

ps..in the attched pic you can see the Ling meat on the bottom of the plate, the bluish cab poking up in the middle, and the filets of two blues and one olive on the top. Heads, collars and belly meat donated to my daughters' baby sitter to make soup for her family. :smt001
