Smith River 10/28. Bank Fishing...

Arrived at the Smith River on 10/28 approximately at 08:30hr. with two of my homee's.  It was a chilly morning with frost still on the ground, the sent of cow crap in the air, and the sound of the ocean waves crashing just on the other side of the sand dunes.

We walked just short of a mile to get to the fishing hole they call Sand Hole! Once we arrived there was a fish being caught but comes loose after a short fight. We all get excited and scramble for a spot to fish. I take my first cast and before I could sit down the guy, three poles down, hooks up an yells “FISH ON GOING UP”! To avoid tangling up,all the surrounding fisherman reel's up there lines. This went on for the next fifteen minutes before it was my turn.

I get my first line rub and my heart rate starts to go up I wait.. , then my pole goes bend-do, I set the hook and I yell fishhh…fish…fish… off. S#*$$%!~  My line fails me. I soon tide another leader on and back  in the water again. By this time my other home’e  down from where I was. Has one on,  hooked up and landing a nice king about a 28 pound-er. I call my friend who was just a few  yard from me to come up and fish next to me.

 Before you know it, another chance a fish takes of with my line and  I get another fish on! But, just in that seconds, my line fails me again! I’m starting to think that my 12lb. test Maxima line was not cutting it. I was getting ready to quit. But first I had to try again before I head out to buy new line from the local bait and tackle (Sports Haven in Brookings OR) cutting 50ft of line off from the spool. I tied another leader- on and casted out again.

As I was fixing my tackle malfunction my friend hooks up and lands a 37lb. fresh king with sea lice still attached to the fish. It was a crommer!

Turns out that the first 50ft. of my 12lb. test had some twisting and nicks in it causing it to break.
I ended up C&R four fish and Keeping one hen full of roe.

Friends:
Danny   = 28lb.

Bay    = 37lb.

Alien   =20lb.
End of Day

We were using fishpils on a #2 hook slidding  pencil-led set-up with 18" to 4'  leaders.

It's yakable. I did last year. But this time I didn't because of cargo space was an issue :smt013
